In lowlands where water gathers, and often stagnates, swamps are formed. Treacherous bogs and shifting waterways make movement very difficult. Swamps contain plant and animal life which are fit for food but usually hard to cultivate. They provide lumber-worthy trees to a lesser extent than forests, and so contribute little to production unless they also contain peat as a fuel source.

Of course these numbers are for races who don't feel "at home" in the swamp. Currently swamps are not home terrain for any race in the game, but such a race may be added in future.
